Technical Design Specifications

We have many years’ experience writing technical design specifications for large infrastructure projects through to small site refurbishments.

We can produce all of the following types of technical documentation: –

User Requirement Specification (URS)

The URS outlines the needs for what the client requires from a process or system. The URS is written early on in the design process, typically before the system is created. The URS is not intended to be a technical document; readers with a general knowledge of the process or system should be able to understand the requirements outlined in the document.

The URS is generally a planning document, created when the end user is planning a system and is trying to determine specific needs. When a system has already been created, or for less complex systems, the URS can be combined with the FDS.

Functional Design Specification (FDS)

The FDS specifies the functions that a system or process must be able to perform.

Typically, the client has a high level view of what they want the system or process to do and it is the job of the FDS to take that high level view and provide the details of what it does, how it is used, and what it looks like. By creating a comprehensive FDS as a deliverables document, time and productivity are saved during the development stage, thereby managing the expectations of both parties.

We also have the technical ability to create system and technical design for projects, from standalone processes to a complete system design.

We can work directly with software engineers to help develop a project or improve on system design.

Factory and Site Acceptance Test Documentation (FAT / SAT)

Any project that involves plant or equipment being developed and supplied from a third party should have a FAT and SAT incorporated into the system life-cycle.

A FAT is usually preformed at the ‘Factory’ or works prior to shipping to the client. The system is tested in accordance with the clients approved test plans and specifications to show that system is at a point to be installed and tested on site.

A SAT is carried out once the system is installed on site and is tested in accordance to client approved test plans and specifications to show the system is installed properly and interfaces with other systems and peripherals in its working environment.

We provide comprehensive FAT and SAT documents which accompany each stage of the acceptance process. The completed SAT document is then combined with the FDS to compile an As-Built FDS.

Commissioning Documentation and Solutions

Mobile Commissioning Documentation

Our mobile commissioning system provides commissioning documentation (custom designed test & check sheets) in an electronic form that is completed on site and relayed to a central server / office in real or available time.

The main advantages of this is that at any time project critical staff can view the documentation status and the completion rate, a report can be assembled on demand to show exactly how many documents have been completed and the status of documents in operation.

Another advantage of this system is that the compilation of commissioning documents can be automated and use standard documents for each project.

Each commissioning document can be compiled automatically from the equipment / instrument schedules and loaded in to the system and mobile tablet on demand.

Traditionally site or factory commissioning has been performed using paper copies of commissioning documents. The main problem with this method of operation is that the completion status of the documents is only known to the commissioning staff and that the information stays with them, or on site, until it is completed or issued with draft documentation. It’s almost impossible for project managers or other relevant staff to know the exact status of the documents or know the completion status; often project critical staff are only aware that some documents are incomplete or missing at the documentation delivery stage.

Commissioning Plans

We have produced detailed commissioning plans on a range of projects to suit specific client requirements. We engage with contractors and the end client from an early stage of a project to clearly define the best solutions for completing commissioning activities efficiently.

We can develop bespoke test, installation and check sheets and develop detailed commissioning strategies.

Health & Safety Documentation

Health & Safety File

The health and safety file provides a powerful management and information tool to protect those working on both current and future construction projects.

The health and safety file is only formally required for those projects which have more than one contractor. Regulation 12 of CDM 2015 requires in that during the pre-construction phase of a construction project the principal designer must prepare a health and safety file which is ”appropriate to the characteristics of the project”. It should contain information relating to the project which is likely to be needed to ensure the health and safety of those involved in future projects.

We liaise with the principal contractor and visit site on a regular basis to create and update the Health and Safety File with all relevant information.

DSEAR Reports

The Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations 2002 (DSEAR) (SI 2002/2776) came into force on the 1 July 2003 and set minimum requirements for the protection of workers from fire and explosion risks related to dangerous substances and potentially explosive atmospheres.

Our reports identify any potential hazards and classify them as to the Likelihood of there being a problem within a hazard. Recommendations will be made to limit the problem or remove it completely.
